Reinforcing bar is cast into concrete to carry the tension loads that concrete alone handles poorly. Y16 is the ribbed high-tensile bar with a 16mm nominal diameter, a heavier size used where beams, columns, slabs and foundations carry more load. The ribs help the concrete grip the steel.
